Matthew 26

The Plot to Kill Jesus

Jesus said that 2 days after Passover the Son of Man will be delivered to be crucified.

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

Jesus was in the house of Simon the leper, a woman poured very expensive ointment on Jesus' head. The disciples say this is a waste, they should sell the oil and give the money to the poor. Jesus says to leave her alone, she is doing a great thing for me to prepare me for burial. "you will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me."

It seems to me like the disciples have the right idea. Why waste this, we could help the poor. Jesus is like "this is nice, don't think to hard about it, let me enjoy it." Honestly, I think Jesus kinda come off like a jerk here. I know I have my bias, but I can't figure out what the actual point of this story is. What is the impression that I am supposed have here?

"Truly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her."

Can't help but notice her name is not mentioned.

Judas to Betray Jesus

Judas took 30 pieces of silver from the chief priest to betray Jesus. From that point on he is looking for an opportunity.

The Passover with the Disciples

Jesus says he will be betrayed by Judas. He says it would have been better if Judas had never been born

Institution of the Lord's Supper

Jesus gives the disciples bread and says eat this, it is my body and he gives them wine and says this is my blood. Drink it for the forgiveness of sins.

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

Jesus says the disciples will all abandon him, Peter says he will never, even if he has to die with Jesus. Jesus says he will deny him 3 times before the rooster crows

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane

Jesus prays for help from God. "The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak". He prayed 3 times. He then wakes his disciples and says his betrayal by sinners is at hand, time to get going.

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

Judas came with a great crowd from the priests and elders of the people. He identified Jesus so the crowd can go after him. One person went up to Jesus and grabbed him and one of people with Jesus cut off the guy's ear and Jesus said told him to stop "live by the sword, die by the sword". Jesus asks why they came to him under cover of night, he has been in the temple teaching day after day.

I don't remember the part of the story where Jesus' guy cuts off the ear of the person who touched Jesus. It's pretty cool.

Jesus Before Caiaphas and the Council

They try to get some testimony to use to put Jesus to death. They ask if he is the Son of God, he says he is the Son of Man and he will be at the right hand of power coming on the clouds of heaven. They take this as blasphemy and decide to put him to death.

Peter Denies Jesus

Some servants claimed Peter had been with Jesus and he said not three times. Then the rooster crowed and he remembered that Jesus had said this would happen and he was sad.

  1. Jesus anointed. I agree with you a hundred percent. I wonder if this "lesson" is why people were always historically contributing so much to the churches while people starved.

Judas to Betray Jesus and the Passover. I think its kind of f'ed up at how Judas gets a bad rap here. What if he wasn't born? Wasn't this move pivotal in Jesus' self sacrifice for the salvation of the world and atonement for the sin of Adam and Eve? I know we touched on this “free will” thing, but wasn't he destined to betray Jesus in order for this plan to be carried out? Whether or not it's real, the gospel of Judas says that Jesus told Judas to betray him. National Geographic channel had a cool documentary on the gospel of Judas. It's posted on youtube.

Institution of the Lord's Supper. This section has been a debate in the churches since the Reformation as to whether he was being literal.

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial. This is one of the many places where the stories differ a bit from gospel to gospel.

Jesus Prays in Gethsemane. See above. In John 12:27 he doesn't seem to ask for God to save him.

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus. Again, in John 18:3-5 the account is a bit different. Jesus actually identified himself. I think this might also be the only gospel that mentions the ear thing. I like this story as you put it Jesus more or less says “he who lives by the sword dies by the sword.” I'm not really sure, but I wonder if that falls under the category of one of the many sayings, or future literally allusions to the bible in other texts. Is this at odds with what we read earlier about Jesus saying (sic) “I come not to bring the peace but the sword”? Also, in verse 56 where he says that all this is done to “fulfill the scriptures...” Could someone point out where in the scripture it says anything about this? I have never been able to locate the prophecy about him being betrayed by one of his own etc.

Jesus Before Caiaphas and the Council. He goes to Annas first in John 18:13. If I understand right, here the “false witnesses say that he said he would rebuild the temple” but according to John 2:19-21 he actually says this. Regardless, I think in every gospel he seems to say that the pharasees will all see his second coming, but he never comes.

Peter Denies Jesus. Another story that doesn't really match up in the three gospels. See John 18:17,25-27; Mark 14:66-71; and Luke 22:56-60.

  2. "
Is this at odds with what we read earlier about Jesus saying (sic) “I come not to bring the peace but the sword”?

yeah, I think it is, but it goes along with turn the other cheek and love your neighbor.
