Luke 4

The Temptation of Jesus

Jesus walked around for 40 days where he ate nothing, the devil tempted him and told him he should turn stone into bread so he has something to eat. Jesus replies "Man shall not live by bread alone"

What does this mean? You shall not live by bread alone...ok, but you do need some food right? Looked back at Matthew's version of this story, apparently you are supposed to live off of the words of God.

Satan says he will give Jesus authority over all of the kingdoms of earth if he just worships Satan. Jesus says you should only worship God.

Jesus knows he is talking to Satan right? Why is this even a temptation?

Satan asks Jesus to jump off the top of the temple and have the angels save him. He says he shouldn't test God.

Again, why exactly is this a temptation?

Jesus Begins His Ministry

With the power of the spirit (I'm assuming this is the Holy Spirit) Jesus returned to Galilee and started teaching in the synagogues.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

Jesus returns to his home town of Nazareth and went to the synagogue where he stood up and read. He read some scroll and everyone was happy about what he said and that he spoke well. They asked if he was Joseph's son and asked him if he could do the same thing here as he did in Capernaum. He said that no prophet is ever accepted in his hometown and he told a story about Elijah. They were filled with wrath and drove him to the edge of town where they were going to throw him off of a cliff, but he got away.

What am I missing here? Why did they want to kill him?

Jesus Heals a Man with an Unclean Demon

There was a guy possessed by a demon in Capernaum who started yelling at Jesus. He said "be silent and come out of him!" and the guy was suddenly fine, the demon had not harmed him. People were amazed and spread the word.

Are there clean demons?

Jesus Heals Many

He healed Simon's mother in law and then everyone around who was sick came to Jesus and he healed them as well. Many demons came out of people and they said he was the son of god.

Jesus Preaches in Synagogues

Jesus tried to leave but the people didn't want him to. He said he has to spread the good news to the kingdom

  1. Temtation of Jesus. I think you have the right idea about the "other stuff" meaning that you need to words of God as well. While I think technically you can live on food and water and nothing else, your life is going to be pretty much shit. I think to live a good life you also need things like support, love etc

Temptation of Christ. I agree. Why is it even a temptation? Doesn't God have dominion over everything? I think the response from another commenter in Matthew said something about the Devil being a deceiver. How do you deceive God? I kind of view it like me coming to your house and trying to sell you your house for twenty bucks. It's a suckers move. And Jesus ain't no sucka foo! Accodring to this gospel he can not be tempted anyway. I also have a note saying that certain tests seem to be okay with God. It's not a "you can never, ever tempt God" deal. The following verses it can be up to one's interpretation as to whether they are tempting God or not.;1+kings+18:36-38;2+kings+20:8-11

When he is in the temple, here is a comparison of what is written in Isiah and here (close enough for me): (Note: in the context in Isiah, Isiah is referring to himself);isaiah+61:1-2

As far as your thoughts on why he was rejected, I can understand that. If one of my friends I grew up with started saying that he was a prophet, I would think he was bat shit crazy. Even if he had a bunch of followers, I would likely think he was just another Jim Jones

  2. I like what you said about the 'can't live by bread alone' thing. I think I was being too literal.

Maybe James says that you can't tempt God because of this incident.

You bring up an interesting point about Jim Jones, if a kid I grew up with came around and said he was a prophet I would think he is crazy, but on the other hand, if anyone else came around saying they were a prophet I would think them equally crazy. You are right thought, there are differences when you have a history with someone.

  3. Still.. this isn't just any guy. It's freaking Jesus..
